Before James Yap meets with the management of the Rain or Shine organization to discuss a new contract, he would like to concentrate on getting back into peak physical shape first.
After being away from the game for several months to fulfill his duties and obligations after being elected as councilor in the first district of San Juan in the past May polls, the two-time PBA Most Valuable Player remarked that he is still regaining form after being away from the game for so long.
Yap, who turned 40 in February of this year, revealed that “Actually, we had not yet discussed the contract” in their conversation. “Kasi, gusto ko pang magpa-condition para hindi naman tayo mapapahiya sa Rain or Shine na makipag-usap tayo.
“Kasi ‘yung management very understanding, kasi sinabi, ‘Kung kailan ka ready, sabihan mo lang kami.’ So ngayon, nasa stage ako na magpapa-kundisyon ako, kasi halos 8 to 9 months na akong natengga.”
Yap made the statement shortly after leaving the Philsports Arena
Where he had been watching the Elasto Painters’ loss to San Miguel Beer in the Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday night. The score was 113-105. According to him, this was the first time in several months that he had watched the team.
Since he had been elected to the position of councilor, this was actually his second trip to the PBA. Before, on July 29, he went to the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan to see Game Two of the quarterfinals of the Philippine Cup. The game was held there.
The seven-time winner, who had fun posing for pictures with fans before and even during the game, had the urge to compete once more.
Yap, who has been present in Rain or Shine practices since August of this year, remarked that he was “kind of feeling like a rookie again.” “Sarap ng emotion na nanood ako ngayon. Eight months bago ako ulit nanood ng game ng team ko, Rain or Shine.
“Nakakapanibago. Pero yun nga, ang sarap ng feeling na parang gusto ko na pumasok kanina,” he continued with a chuckle.
When Yap was asked whether his comeback could take place at some point during the current season, he reiterating that he would like to be in the greatest possible shape, driven to become an asset once he plunges back into action with the ball club once he returns to activity with the ball club.
“Baka. Kasi ‘yun nga, sabi ng management, let us know, anytime naman pwede naman tayong bigyan ng management ng kontrata.
“Yun nga lang, i just want to repay what they will gave to me” remarked the 16-time All-Star. “Hindi ‘yung parang bumalik ka lang na parang nandiyan ka lang. ‘Yun ‘yung nasa mind ko ngayon.”
