OKBET UAAP – UP Player of the Year Fortea continues to perform admirably

An unheralded hero has stepped up to the challenge and is now taking the spotlight after the University of the Philippines(UP) found itself in a position where it needed heroes in order to maintain its claim on the crown in Diliman.

The Fighting Maroons haven’t missed a beat despite the absence of their starting point guard JD Cagulangan, who is sidelined. Because of the outstanding performance of gunner Terrence Fortea, they have gotten off to a blistering start in UAAP Season 85, going 3-0 and taking the early lead in the standings.

The 6.1-foot-tall guard demonstrated that he is still capable of utilizing the same toolbox as he did during his time playing for Batang Gilas and Nazareth School-National University. He made the most of his opportunity and made a significant contribution by averaging 14.7 points, 5.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals over the course of three games, in addition to hitting accurately from outside the arc 10 times out of 20 attempts.

Fortea was awarded the first Collegiate Press Corps UAAP Player of the Week for Season 85, which was bestowed by the Philippine Sports Commission. This honor was given in recognition of his breakout performance.

“Since ‘nung scenario namin about (JD), naging mentality kong kailangan mag-step up para sa team namin,” he said.

During the first game of the week, the 21-year-old set a new career high with 15 points, nine assists, and five rebounds as the University of the Philippines defeated La Salle by a score of 72-69. Then, in their victory over Adamson, which ended in overtime 87-78, he exploded for 12 points, five assists, and three rebounds.

However, there was no way to stop him from that point on. After a win over FEU by a score of 73–67, he increased his career scoring high to 17 points, shooting a perfect 5–5 from three-point range to help UP get out to a winning start.

Because of this, he was recognized and backed by certain modest sponsors, including Jockey, Tinapayan Festival, and MNL Kingpin.

UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde

who was also previously the architect of the Bullpups’ dynasty in high school, complimented the stratospheric growth of his prized guard in the hopes of forging a new and more deadly backcourt duo.

“He had to make a lot of adjustments for that position throughout the previous season. But this season, I think unti-unti, habang wala si (JD), nabibigyan siya ng time at nag-iimprove siya. Hopefully, pagbalik ni (JD), at least, puwede silang magsabay,” he remarked.

The weekly award for best player in the league was determined by print and internet writers who cover the league on a regular basis. Fortea won the honor by a narrow margin against longtime teammate Carl Tamayo, La Salle’s Schonny Winston, Ateneo’s Ange Kouame, UE’s Kyle Paranada, and UST’s Nic Cabaero.
